<image:title>News - Yale Researchers Receive Google Earth Engine Award for Land Studies</image:title>
<image:caption>Using satellite imagery embedded with data on reflectance, the UHPSI team will work on developing statistical tools that rapidly scan a large area to locate plants or land-cover of particular interest. In northeastern Wyoming, the team will be using the tools to locate leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula; displayed within the inset image above), an invasive species that displaces native rangeland vegetation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was co-leader of a six-person scientific team that studied the upper Nooksack Valley of the North Cascades National Park, which has a valley floor about 3,000 feet elevation. Our team helicoptered in our supplies and camped out for eight weeks in the valley doing the field work. The valley had been glaciated (see lateral moraines) during the recent Little Ice Age. Notice glaciers above cliffs; during rainy weather, these glaciers would send rock debris and snow avalanches down the cliffs.</image:caption>

We held meetings with government officials of many countries, private meeting with officials from the World Bank, the European Union, and heads of state. We did not make our concerns public for concern about pyromaniacs and terrorists using the tinderbox to their advantage. We also did and published a study on the potential effects in case a worse case fire occurred. Now, a United Nations project is addressing the issues, being led by David LaRoche.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Those of us trained in forestry knew that the extreme fire prevention of past decades had led to very crowded, unhealthy forests. When a fire gets in these forests — which they inevitably will do — the result is an unnaturally intense fire, much different from the less intense fires that used to burn more frequently in less crowded forests.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have learned that people, resources, and the environment are not “zero-sum” entities. That is, we do not need to make some parts worse off to make others better. Through understanding and then organization, innovation, and appropriate management (and non-management of protected areas), we can allow more people to live free of daily food and shelter concerns, able to have the modern communication and transportation conveniences, maintain our biodiversity, have cleaner air and water, and choose the lifestyle(s) they want—whether working in a monsoon in the Himalayas, camping in a forest during a New England winter, riding in a boat down the Rio Napo in the Amazon, or visiting environmental policy makers in New York City (here with my class from Yale).</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the Southeastern U.S., E.C. Burkhardt expressed a concern that we were losing red oaks in our alluvial floodplain forests. John Stanturf of the Hardwood Research Laboratory in Stoneville, Mississippi initiated a study that Burk, Danny Skojac, and I did. We confirmed that the red oaks, once the dominant tree in these forests, are indeed not regenerating and showed the major problems was that these oaks need full sunlight to survive and dominate other species (left picture). Since these stands are almost always harvested by partial cutting, more shade tolerant species such as sugarberry (right picture) is replacing oaks as the dominant species.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the late 1960’s foresters really did not know how these mixed species, oak-dominated forests developed. Most people thought they were uneven-aged, but there were not small oaks growing into the overstory. My Ph.D. advisor (“academic father”), Professor David M. Smith, felt they were even-aged, stratified stands based on his long-term observations.</image:caption>
